Global Action Plan recognised for phenomenal work by the Ashden Awards: March 2009

Ashden Awards

The Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy is a UK charity that works to increase the uptake of local sustainable energy across the world.

They do this by finding, rewarding and supporting leading local sustainable energy programmes in the UK and across the developing world.

Global Action Plan was recognised for its Environmental Champions programme which trains workplace teams to change their environmental behaviour.

Improving technology plays a key role in making energy more sustainable and reducing carbon emissions, however, behavioural change is just as important, and in some ways much harder to achieve. The way organisations operate is based on employee behaviour and has an enormous impact on the demand for energy and natural resources, yet people often find it hard to form new habits and sustain them. Global Action Plan has spent the last 15 years tackling this problem through various programmes, one of which is Environment Champions, which started in 1997.

Simon Brammer, UK programme manager for the Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy said in The Independent:

"It is very difficult to choose a favourite project because they are all so different. But Global Action Plan does phenomenal work to shift individual behaviour, and enable people to really understand how they're making a difference."
