Energy bike on ITV’s Tonight programme: 25/02/10
Energy bike on ITV's Tonight programme
Our energy bike’s pedal power mission continues with a trip to Sutton Coldfield for ITV’s primetime current affairs show the Tonight programme.
The Tonight programme pulls in an impressive 5 million viewers each week and covers a wide range of topics. Our energy bike is being used to demonstrate how much energy different household appliances use as part of the show's overall topic of energy prices.
Our energy bike makes people think
The Webb family were interviewed to speak about their energy use and the energy bike was an ideal way to get the younger members of the family to understand why their actions are so important in saving energy.
The couples’s children, Jack, 12 and Harry, 9, were challenged to use the bike to power an old-fashioned light bulb and also an energy saving light bulb. Jack managed to get both light bulbs lit for a few seconds and described it as “much harder than you think”.
Mum Lisa, asked him to think of how difficult it was to power household appliances the next time he left the lights on, or left his computer on when not using it!
The programmes presenter, Johnny Maitland, also had a go on the Energy Bike, managing to power the Energy Saving light bulb.
A simple messsage about energy consumption
It's four years since we built our first energy bike, and it's still one of our most popular ecointeractive exhibits and has travelled many times around the UK onits energy saving mission.
The key to the bike is its simple message which links energy consumption to different household appliances, all in a fun and interactive way.
Global Action Plan’s Energy Bike gives a brilliant visual representation of how much energy is actually required to power everyday appliances.
Dave Raddings, Assistant Producer on the Tonight Programme
The energy bike has previously been showcased on the One Show and the Paul O’Grady Show. To see the energy bike watch the Tonight programme on Thursday 25th February at 7.30pm.
