EcoTeams to target 20,000 homes: October 2009
EcoTeams to target 20,000 homes
Global Action Plan have set themselves an the impressive target to reach 20,000 homes through their EcoTeam programme after receiving funding from Defra’s Greener Living fund.
People will get the opportunity to join friends, colleagues and neighbours, to become part of an EcoTeam. EcoTeams aim to bring communities together to reduce their carbon footprint and household bills.
Hilary Benn, Secretary State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs described the initiative as “environmental weight-watchers”.
Over two years the project will save households £3 million, save over 10,000 tonnes of CO2, divert nearly 2,000 tonnes of waste from landfill, and create 2,500 new social groups.
The CO2 saving is equivalent in weight to nearly 9,500 Mini Coopers and the savings of waste to landfill equate to 1000 Asian elephants.
Free training is being offered to people who want to become an EcoTeam leader. This training will teach participants how to set up an EcoTeam, how to tackle their environmental footprint and just why it is so important.
Training events have taken place in London, Bristol and Leeds with more dates being added soon. Anyone can join online throughout the UK by registering at the EcoTeams website: www.ecoteams.org.uk.
The new improved EcoTeams website has the functionality to enable teams to run online, with virtual groups being set up. This gives people more flexibility as it allows groups to run with members across the UK as well as down the road!
We know people have green intentions and are aware of environmental issues. EcoTeams is about providing these people with a friendly, supportive setting to they can share their experiences and ideas so they know they’re not going it alone. Penny Sturgess, Head of Community at Global Action Plan
EcoTeams is excellent for raising awareness, especially when you think you’re quite green already, you find out how much more you could be doing and learn from others who are actually doing things! EcoTeam member
