Case study: Investec

Investec

Investec (comprising Investec plc and Investec Limited) is an international, specialist banking group that provides a diverse range of financial products and services to a select client base.

Background

Investec is driven by a commitment to their core philosophies and values, which include the highest ethical standards. The business had been considering sustainability with respect to banking, products and investments for some time before approaching Global Action Plan.

There was internal recognition that the bank had an impact on the environment through its office space and staff actions at work (and potentially an influence on staff behaviour at home). Investec approached Global Action Plan for assistance.

What actions did we take?

The building itself was relatively energy efficient, so we were asked to address areas where improvements could be made – particularly with respect to waste and energy - by influencing staff and improving working practices to reduce their environmental impact.

With our help Investec established Team Green to take the project forward internally.

Results

Within a year, using innovative communications campaigns such as building a 3D paper tower display, Team Green had achieved:

  • A 28% reduction in annual waste per employee, achieving levels of a Good Practice Office*
  • Recycling rates of up to 70% including furniture and clothing
  • 6% reduction in paper use = 48 trees a year
  • 43% reduction in canteen consumables
  • 97% of photocopiers switched off (a massive increase from just 5%)
