Carbon Gym

There are lots of statistics about C02 out there but as we cannot see CO2 it is difficult to fully comprehend how to reduce your emissions. Specially commissioned for Global Action Plan, the Carbon Gym is a unique system where participants can ‘feel’ the effects of CO2.

The aim of the gym is to help people make the connection between their daily lifestyles and climate change.  The gym contains two pieces of equipment:

Carbon Weights - The weights illustrate the different levels of carbon created through various lifestyle choices.  People feel the weight of CO2 that is produced by different forms of travel; by different types of house insulation; and by food travelling from different locations.  They are challenged to lift the weight of carbon their choices produce.

The Carbon Rower - The rowing machine is specially adapted so when in use it inflates three columns representing the amount of CO2 emitted travelling 2kms by air, car and train. This enables rowers to visualise the volume of CO2 produced by their travel choices.

The carbon gym was brought into the centre to help raise awareness of how things we use everyday affect the environment.

“The gym was set up quickly and efficiently the staff were very professional throughout the day, whether they were encouraging people to have a go on the gym or just answering questions. The gym created a lot of interest and it was excellent to see how people really wanted to know how they could help the environment.”
