As CO2 is a gas and can’t be seen, it’s difficult to fully comprehend how much CO2 we emit and how we can reduce our emissions.
Specially commissioned for Global Action Plan, our carbon gym is a unique tool. Users can see and feel the effects of CO2 by rowing to try to inflate three columns of air, which represent the amount of CO2 emitted when travelling by train, car and plane.
The associated weight of this CO2 can be felt with the accompanying dumbbells. The carbon gym provides an all-round environmental workout for the brain and body!
The aim of the gym is to help people make the connection between their daily lifestyle and climate change.
What does the gym consist of?
Carbon weights - these show the different levels of carbon created through various lifestyle choices. People feel the weight of CO2 produced by different forms of travel, house insulation and food miles. They are challenged to lift the weight of carbon their choices produce.
Carbon rower - the rowing machine is adapted so when in use it inflates three columns representing the amount of CO2 emitted travelling 2kms by air, car and train. This helps rowers to visualise the volume of CO2 produced by their travel choices.
Do you want to hire the carbon gym?
You can hire the carbon gym to engage your colleagues in the environmental issues surrounding climate change and have fun at the same time. It’s perfect for enhancing events. You may also wish to hire it for use at a local school, workplace or community event. The carbon gym can be hired along with the energy bike.

The gym was set up quickly & efficiently, the staff were very professional throughout the day, whether encouraging people to have a go or just answering questions. The gym created a lot of interest & it was excellent to see how people really wanted to know how they could help the environment.
